Anatolian Rug Design

I wanted to tell a spring story by looking at different motifs and colors in hand-made Anatolian carpets. I worked with the meaning of each symbol while creating a narrative around Mother Nature and how spring brings good news.
The colors are from natural resources to keep the authenticity.

Softwares used so far: Photoshop, Illustrator, and Procreate

Two possible drafts designed in quadrants since Anatolian rugs tend to follow a symmetrical design except the signature in the middle. The repeating motifs in between each border signify a different aspect of mother nature.

Meaning of each symbol used to tell said story of motherhood and mother nature. The focus was on femininity as these kinds of work, whether it be hand-woven artwork (that isn’t considered art) or calling it “mother nature” as the one that does creation and upkeep of life on earth, was deliberate. We don’t notice how much of our language and how we perceive lies in the feminine, and we hypothetically and literally step all over it at times.
